After two years of successful hosting in Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), Summer Research Program in Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SPIA 2019) will be held in Seoul National University (SNU) in South Korea this year.

SPIA is a seven-week summer program for undergraduate students jointly organized by SNU and HKUST. The students will form teams of four to work on

1.       a real-world research project proposed by a sponsor from industry or the public sector under the guidance of an academic mentor, or

2.       a research project in applied mathematics proposed by a faculty member under his/her guidance.

During the program, with the aid from the mentors, the students will learn about the background of the topics, study mathematical and computational approach to handle the problems, and show their progress and results through reports and oral-presentations.

Program Details

SPIA 2019 will be held from June 25 to August 13 at Seoul National University. It is essential that the students are available for the duration of the program; late arrivals and early departures are not possible.

Students will work in team of four comprising two students selected by HKUST and two students selected by SNU. There will be 16 students in SPIA 2019 working in four teams. English is required for participation.

Accommodation for all students will be provided at Chung-Ang University (CAU) near SNU. Office space on SNU campus will be provided for the teams to conduct their work on the project.

Each team should submit one interim report, one written report and one oral presentation at the conclusion of the project. Industrial sponsors will be invited to attend the oral presentation.

Some cultural programs will be provided, and SNU students are expected to participate in organizing these programs.

Detailed schedule is presented below. Depending on the progress of the project, schedule can be changed flexibly.

Week1. Determination of project topic and direction.

Week2. Learn about basic backgrounds of the project.

Week3. Execute simplified version of the project.

Week4. Mid-presentation

Week5. Project Execution

Week6. Project Execution

Week7. Final Presentation, Final Report
